Secure Password Vault
Budgets Get Real includes a secure password vault.
This module will automatically install for you when you update to Build b031. It is is accessed under the Extensions sub-menu and from Import file screens.
This module fully provides for multiple keychains, each able to securely store log-in usernames, passwords and other related information
No more having to worry about remembering long lists of passwords. The Password Vault allows you to copy and paste the details directly into your web browser whenever you log-in to your bank. This reduces the risk of your passwords being exposed to virus programs that record your keystrokes.
Creating a keychain
When you first access The Password Vault you will be asked to create a keychain. You must create a keychain to proceed. You enter a keychain name, a password and, optionally, a hint to allow you to remind you of the password.
We do not recommend the use of a hint, because in most circumstances the hints are too obvious and make the password easier to guess. Hints will only show on the second and subsequent attempts.
Your password should NOT be the same as that used to control access to Budgets GetReal.
You can change your keychain password and optional hint at any time. You cannot rename your keychain.
Select a strong password (use a combination of letters, numbers and spaces). Passwords are case sensitive.
You can use a passphrase of several words, and this is a good method, particularly if the words incorporate a mixture of letters and number. If you use a passphrase be careful in the use of double spaces or spaces at the start or end of the phrase (since these are not removed).
If you lose this password there is nothing that can be done.
Informed Choices can not recover your password. Your password is never stored - only a cryptographically strong hashed version is stored, which is totally unrecoverable. When you enter your password to access the vault it is hashed using the same cryptographic function and compared against the stored value.
Entering data to the keychain
You can enter whatever data you wish within the following constraints:
1. A Reason must be specified. This identifies the contents of the record e.g. “My NAB Flexi Account”
2. A Username or User ID: 32 characters long. Can include spaces
3. A Password or PIN: 32 characters. Can include spaces
4. A short note: 32 characters. Designed for short reminders like Hints etc. on web-sites
5. A long note: 256 character general description
Displaying your data
You can display your data in a detailed view - as a table of reasons, UserIDs and Passwords. Alternatively, you can simply list the reason. The reason view is preferable since your data is not viewable to any casual observer.
Simply click on the reason link to show all details. You can paste the contents of the UserID or Password fields directly to a web-browser where requested.
Closing your keychain
You should close your keychain immediately after you are finished with it or leave your computer. As a safeguard, Budgets GetReal will automatically close your opened keychain if there is no activity detected for 30 seconds.
